Taking the time to construct a well-thought-out premise makes it easier to write your novel and takes your storytelling to a deeper level.

I used the following process for my last six novels to give me a firm grasp on what my story is about before I even consider the plot. In fact, a premise developed this way makes the plot considerably easier to write because it provides all the key ingredients. Even if you’re an author that prefers to just start writing, and hate to outline (a “pantser”), I recommend you try this process. It will take you as little as an hour or two, so let’s get into it…

1. Who is the Lead Character?

Understand your principal character and what makes them tick. Characters drive a good story, not plot, so make him or her distinct and interesting. Or you may have several major characters, which makes it crucial that you are aware of each’s motivations and differences. This leads to your first important decision — point of view.

If first person, why are you writing it from their perspective? Consider another. If you choose the wrong character to follow, it may reduce the drama or enjoyability for the reader. It might also limit your options. For example, choosing the stableboy prevents you from writing any scenes inside the manor house, but choosing the butler…
