It amuses me that writers believe that a breakout is anything other than luck. Art has always been so subjective as to be thrown to the winds of luck and chance. Especially today when tens of thousands of new books are published each month. Good books, even brilliant books vanish to the depths of the ocean of literary works, while bad books can go on sell bucketloads.

And what marks good and bad? I would say NOT how good our writing is, much as we are dismayed by that. A good book is purely one that readers love and buy. An example is "Fifty shades of Grey". Terrible writing but soccer-moms lapped it up.

Keep writing. Sometime, somewhen you might get lucky.
