Every year there are multiple competitions and challenges to develop core technologies to make a space elevator a reality.

Until then, rocketry is a necessary evil, as much technology since the industrial revolution has been. I would hazard that widescale adoption of EVs powered from renewal energy will far out balance the issues of even high tourism rocketry.
