Other than the term larboard mentioned in other comments, a different root of port and starboard exists going back to the fact that very early vessels used a steering board on the right (starboard) side. This was used to steer before central rudders became a thing. So in this alternative explanation, ships had to dock on the left side so as not to damage their steering boards, and so left became "port" for obvious reasons.
