The ideas for improving "You are Here" maps are good and should help, but this is a damning indictment of lack of intelligence. Anthropological studies of primitive clans suggests man does have an inherent ability to locate based on things in his immediate vicinity and distance, whether they are orientated to his direction or not.
Mall maps in particular are easy. They list stores. You can easily see a chain of store name to look for on your route to your destination, as well as other icons such as stairways or restrooms.
I admit my bias as someone with exceptional spatial awareness. You can throw me in a suburb of any city I've seen a map of and I can orient myself and get from A to B without anything at hand.
