Language in medieval times was so much more interesting than today. We could make our workdays full of fun and smiles (at the very least confusion) if we dropped such language into our everyday conversations.

While you could go all out and imbue medievalism into your entire conversations, much like ‘Talk like a Pirate’ Day, I recommend dropping the odd word only. The dichotomy between modern speech and a single word has a funnier effect. Without further ado, here is my selection for your perusal.

Guv’nor — as in Governor

Means: To refer to someone superior or more exalted than you.

Tomorrow, try greeting your boss with Mornin’ guv’nor. Spoken with a British accent of course. Likely to bring a frown of confusion to his face, but, hey, go for it. For best effect, tap your fist to your forehead.

How stands the hour?

Means: What time is it

This has a valiant, heroic knight feel to it. I recommend using in advance of a meeting you are dreading. Speak in a somber tone suggesting you are heading for the gallows. If your meetings are anything like some I attend — you are!
