You're ignoring a considerable number of factors here:
1. It's only a matter of time before long term parking structures at places like airports have charging bays to cater for all cars. They only have to trickle enough power to keep the battery at a low percentage
2. The guy that destroyed his Tesla is an outlier. For a start less than one percent of batteries fail within 5+ years, and most are replaced under warranty. There are Teslas out there that have driven a million miles or 8 years with only a few % battery degradation. And we haven't even gotten started on battery tech yet.
3. Don't confuse tinkering with an ICE engine with the needs of clean transportation. You are likely still able to tinker with ICE vehicles as a hobbyist. Just as a guy shooting model rockets isn't affected by NASA or the ESA.
4. Don't assume our only type of battery tech for the future is lithium ion. We are likely to develop synthetic materials from carbon.
5. Pricing cars out of existence is actually not a bad idea. They are the worst invention man ever made, gobbling up enormous parts of our cities and countryside. The stupidity of one person vehicles is amazing. If we can't afford cars, maybe we'll construct decent mass transit.
